# WHAT IS AN OPERATING SYSTEM?

An **Operating System (OS)** is system software that manages and controls the entire computer system. It acts as an interface between the **user**, **hardware**, and **software**, allowing the computer to function smoothly and efficiently. The operating system receives commands from the user, processes them, and instructs hardware devices to perform tasks. For example: If a user gives a **Print command**, the operating system sends instructions to the printer and manages the printing process. Examples of Operating Systems: * Windows XP * Windows 7 * Windows 10 * Windows 11 * macOS * Linux --- # WINDOWS XP DESKTOP ELEMENTS After logging into Windows XP, the first screen displayed is called the **Desktop**. The desktop contains different elements for accessing files, folders, applications, and system settings. --- # TASKBAR The **Taskbar** is the horizontal bar located at the bottom of the desktop. Functions: * Shows opened applications * Displays recent active windows * Provides quick access to programs * Contains the Start button --- # START MENU The **Start Menu** allows users to: * Open applications * Access system settings * Search files and folders * Shut down the computer Users can open applications by clicking the **Start button**. --- # DESCRIPTION OF SCREEN ELEMENTS ### 1. Start Button Located at the bottom-left corner of the screen and used to open the Start Menu. ### 2. All Programs Displays all installed applications and allows users to access them. ### 3. My Documents Stores personal files such as: * Documents * Letters * Reports * Spreadsheets ### 4. My Recent Documents Displays recently opened files. ### 5. My Pictures Stores image and photo files. ### 6. My Computer Provides access to: * Drives * Storage devices * System resources ### 7. Help and Support Provides guidance and solutions for using Windows. ### 8. Search Helps users locate: * Files * Folders * Applications --- # HOW TO START A PROGRAM Example: Opening MS Paint Steps: 1. Click the **Start Button** 2. Select **All Programs** 3. Open **Accessories** 4. Click **Paint** --- # HOW TO QUIT A PROGRAM Steps: 1. Click the **Close (X) Button** located at the top-right corner of the application window. --- # LOCATING FILES OR FOLDERS Windows XP provides a search feature to locate: * Pictures * Music * Videos * Documents * Text files * Spreadsheets * Files by name, size, and modification date --- # CONTROL PANEL The **Control Panel** contains administrative tools used to manage and configure computer settings. Examples: * Display settings * User accounts * Devices * Network settings --- # MY COMPUTER My Computer provides access to computer resources including: * Hard drives * External storage * Connected devices --- # DRIVE A **Drive** is a storage device used to store data. Examples: * Hard Disk Drive (HDD) * Solid State Drive (SSD) * CD/DVD Drive --- # FOLDERS Folders are containers used to organize and store files and documents. --- # HOW TO CREATE A NEW FILE OR FOLDER Steps: 1. Right-click on an empty area 2. Select **New** 3. Click **Folder** 4. Type the folder name 5.
